The Panama Canal stretches some 80km from Panama City in the south to Colón in the north and is a staggeringly impressive work of human (especially when considering it was completed more than a hundred years ago!) engineering that allows huge vessels – which otherwise would have to travel all the way around Cape Horn – to traverse the isthmus in less than one day. We recommend a cruise of the canal as the best way to fully experience it.
